Hope for rocks!
The story on the "recycled houses" in the NY Times Home & Garden section is amazing...we in the biz call it "Vernacular Architecture," or building as one sees fit. Just look at this perfectly happy rock collection all nestled happily in a fence! A girl can take her rocks with her!
Quite a list to make our new Edwardian flat homey: new kitchen floor; new light fixtures; drapes/blinds/rugs. Mommy snagged a funky huge rug for $30 greenbacks at the flea market, and a lamp and a table I will be refinishing with milk paint (no varnish, bleck!) Martha Stewart-style. We are getting the new floor together with linoleum squares and looking for more rugs on Etsy--there's a woman in Pt. Clinton, Ohio, making neat rag rugs on her loom--that's fine for the kitchen! I have some vintage hardware for hanging plants (lots of green looks great in this kind of flat) and I'm going to replace the light switch covers, since they are new, cheap and mostly crooked already!
Off to the scrap yard--Habitat for Humanity has a gigantic warehouse downtown to go through, and the pricier salvage guys in Berkeley have lots of mismatching this and that. I learned my lesson trying to buy new last time we did the bathroom--that stuff really adds up! The architect in the NY Times article has it down--you can recycle and also take care to make it attractive!

The Habitat warehouse sounds like a great idea -- probably a huge amount of very good things.
The rock collection looks lovely. A good way to have something beautiful in a small space, too.
