Kaboomski!

Life with baby has a way of happening to you despite best-laid plans...natural childbirth...pffffttt!!! Gradual weaning...nnn-noooo! Transitioning to a toddler bed by lowering the side of the crib and then getting a nice little bed after weeks of shopping and research...nn-no-no-no.
After a few good froggie bounces in there this morning Mommy and Daddy heard a resounding "Crack!" and there went the crib's mattress base! Fiberboard, not plywood, at a weak point where Daddy threaded through the power strip cord...time to go to Ikea~! Mommy called her friend with a cute bed and got a recommendation for an expandable bed. The boy is a sprout and needs the medium length already!
Would Nate get his nap? Would he sleep? Would he get up and play "Edo goes up, edo goes down?" (elevator game with the door to his room). Would he cry bitterly?
A little alarm at seeing his crib taken down, then a nice afternoon at Ikea on the most beautiful day of the year (what is wrong with people? The most fantastically warm Sunday we've had in months and the place is packed with strolling shoppers! Maybe their stuff broke, too). Mommy lets him know it's time to try out his new bed and off he goes to naptime!
A full hour of playing/chatting to himself, finally out for an hour and a half, but he never got up! Matt and I huddled together outside the door--what would happen? Nothing! The boy loves to sleep! He figured out how to get up after we woke him up, even with the bed rail, but he was even eager to get to bed tonight!! I think the fact his room is really still the Cat's Lair rather than a playspace helps. And we always put him to bed really really tired.

Day three: 3:15pm and Mommy is destroyed. Will Nate go to bed? "Short one!" he demands, but doesn't get up. "Ok, one more book, a short one. C'mon up." Mommy helps him up.
Goes to the sofa, runs around a little more, one more bookie, then to bed. Wants to turn on and off the lights, no no no! Mommy tucks him him and there he stays! The power of suggestion! Do not cross the magic line!
I can see the two of you -- Mom and Dad -- hovering as we all do at a time of change and finding that your little one is handling it with complete ease and aplomb. There -- another step safely taken, and let's get on with life, Folks!
Still a little tension around getting him to stay in bed--last night:
"Do you want to get ready for bed?"
"NNnnnnoooo."
"Time to get ready for bed." etc...
In bed: "I get up? I turn out the lights??"
"Mommy tucks you in!"
Commence laying down on his pillow, mommy tucks him in with goxsies.
"Nate sleeps in his new bed!"
"Night-night" etc...
Perhaps time for books in his bed? Maybe we'll try that, too.
