Doing some reading, as usual! warning:rant

Sometimes Nate just helps himself to a book and is content, but other times mommy feels like she has to take him to a music class in the winter chill.
Does this class cost just enough to make a SAHM think carefully about spending for it? Yes it does. Especially because she knows other SAHM's who would go if it were cheaper. Yes Virginia, class and social barriers start very early around here. But really now, you may ask, whom do you think should pay for the class? Bill and Melinda Gates? Yes, that's fine by me! Then my neighbor could go.
Is mommy perhaps still stewing about joining the $$ mommy group rather than the free Kaiser one? Yes, especially since the director gave her the hard sell like she was joining a gym or buying a car. Mommy perhaps acted on her own social prejudices--that the $$ one would be better--and discovered later the same types of moms (women who value education, those who read lots of baby books) will join either. La Leche League is one good free resource--pretty helpful, too.
And so Baby goes to music class and we have a nice time, though he spent most of today trying to find something good to chew on (teething). The delightful teacher (mostly) keeps Nate's attention, and the structure takes pressure off of the parents. And the other tots are very cute, bopping and playing and drooling. We sing together and I help baby clap along. Good times.

The mommy group I joined has become a sort of franchise--the original organizer now acts as administrator and no longer runs any groups herself. Word of mouth keeps them popular. They say they have "scholarships" but these are little-mentioned and I've never met anyone who availed herself of one.
Everything is so expensive now - but you know - everyone wants a piece of the action. A room costs $$$ to rent or lease, the instructor is not going to do it just for the fun of it, and if it looks like there is equipment needed that's more $$$.
It's not that I don't mind paying, it's that it's more than yoga classes! And so past my comfort level. I've talked to other moms who feel it's past theirs, too.
Life has become pretty complicated, it seems. You're certainly keeping Nate busy, happy, and healthy. Looks as if Oakland offers lots to try and many options to explore a real plus! Enjoy.
I really am glad that we did this class, btw, really fun. Matt took him to one too, very nice.
